Since 1828
Trusted and local since 1828
Founded in 1828 as the Bank of Centreville in West Warwick, Rhode Island, Centreville Bank has spent nearly two centuries helping individuals, families, businesses, and communities achieve their financial goals. Established by local business and civic leader John Greene and surgeon Sylvester Knight, the bank was built on a foundation of strong relationships, local decision-making, and community investment that continues today.
Throughout its history, Centreville has evolved to meet the changing needs of its customers. Following the National Bank Act, the institution became Centreville National Bank in 1865. Centreville Savings Bank was incorporated in 1888, expanding opportunities for customers to save for their futures. In 1993, the two institutions merged to become the single organization known today as Centreville Bank.
From its original location in Centreville Village to its longtime headquarters in Arctic Village, West Warwick, Centreville has grown steadily while maintaining its commitment to the communities it serves. The bank opened its first branch office in Coventry in 1960 and has continued expanding its footprint through new locations, strategic investments, and innovation.
Over the past decade, Centreville Bank has experienced significant growth and transformation. The bank expanded its presence throughout Rhode Island and Eastern Connecticut through branch growth, strategic investments, and the acquisition of Putnam Bank in 2020. Along the way, Centreville introduced innovations such as its Universal Banker model, Interactive Teller Machines (ITMs), and enhanced digital banking capabilities, all designed to create a more convenient and personalized customer experience.
Today, Centreville Bank operates 26 locations throughout Rhode Island and Eastern Connecticut and continues to invest in technology, talent, and facilities that support the evolving needs of customers, businesses, and communities.
Community commitment remains at the heart of Centreville’s mission. Established in 2008, The Centreville Bank Charitable Foundation has invested more than $10 million through grants, sponsorships, and scholarships for organizations throughout Rhode Island and Eastern Connecticut. In 2024 alone, employees contributed a record 6,358 volunteer hours, the highest level of volunteerism in the bank’s history.
Centreville Bank is also committed to improving financial literacy through educational programs, school partnerships, community workshops, and resources that help individuals and businesses make informed financial decisions.
Centreville Bank has earned regional and national recognition for both its financial performance and workplace culture. The bank has been named one of Forbes’ Best-In-State Banks, American Banker’s Best Banks to Work For, Providence Business News’ Best Places to Work, Hartford Courant Top Workplaces, one of America’s Best Workplaces by Best Companies Group, and one of the Boston Globe’s 2025 Fastest-Growing Companies.
In April 2025, Centreville Bank became the naming rights partner of Centreville Bank Stadium, home of Rhode Island FC, reflecting the organization’s commitment to supporting the communities where its customers and employees live and work. Later that year, Centreville successfully transitioned to a Mutual Holding Company structure, positioning the organization for continued growth, modernization, and long-term success.
As Centreville Bank looks to the future, it remains guided by the same principles that have defined it since 1828: conservative banking practices, local leadership, community commitment, and a dedication to helping customers achieve their financial goals. Nearly 200 years after opening its doors, Centreville Bank continues to evolve while staying true to its purpose: helping people achieve financial success and building opportunities for future generations.
